König & Meyer Stands: How a German Company Became a Global Stage Standard

There are brands you have to look for. And there are those that are simply everywhere – at the edge of hall stages, in the studio between speakers, in the corridor next to instruments. König & Meyer, better known as K&M, belongs to the latter category. In 75 years, this German company has grown from a small workshop into a creator of global industry standards, and every step of that journey has been guided by the same philosophy: a good stand should not draw attention to itself. The full range is available in Lithuania via stageiq.lt.

From Six Employees to a Global Standard: The History of K&M

In 1949, in Wertheim am Main, a small town in Baden-Württemberg, Karl König and Erich Meyer began manufacturing music stands and measuring instruments. At that time, the company employed six people, and all premises fit into a 700 square meter building. This was not merely the start of a business, but a new beginning after their previous factory in Thuringia had been nationalized during the Soviet occupation.

The following decades progressed rapidly. In the fifties, the rock and roll wave created a new demand for stage equipment, and K&M quickly expanded its product range to include instrument and microphone stands. In the sixties, the "British Invasion" with The Beatles and the Rolling Stones increased the number of stages across Europe, and K&M was among those supplying instruments for these stages. Such benefit from cultural changes is no coincidence. This is a company that observed what musicians truly needed and reacted faster than its competitors.

Today, the K&M factory in Wertheim employs over 300 people, the company produces over 1800 different products and sells them in more than 80 countries. Almost all metal and plastic components are manufactured by K&M itself. This is not just a marketing statement about "Made in Germany." It is a practical decision that allows for quality control from the first sheet of metal to the final product packaging.

210/2: The Microphone Stand That Became a Global Standard

In 1966, Martin König, together with his father Karl, came up with a simple but ingenious solution: instead of the previous screw-in leg design, the new stand featured a foldable base. Thus, the 210/2 was born, quickly becoming the standard microphone stand worldwide. To date, millions of units of this model have been produced and sold; it is still in production and still purchased as a primary workhorse stand.

In the 1970s, the 210/2 was supplemented with a telescopic boom arm and became the 210/9, another classic model that can be found on virtually every professional stage today. The longevity of these two models is no accident: they were designed with such precision and reliability that there is simply no need to change the fundamental design.

This clearly says something about K&M's design philosophy. The company does not aim for products that look modern in a catalog, but rather for products that will serve for twenty years in daily conditions and never fail at the most crucial moment.

Microphone Stands: From Studio to Large Stage

K&M's range of microphone stands is one of the widest on the market. Classic models with a folding base and telescopic boom arm are suitable for all stage situations. Low-level stands – where the microphone needs to be close to the floor for drums or guitar amplifiers – are a separate category with their own product line. Heavy-duty stands with cast metal bases and casters are designed for studios or fixed installations, where stability is more important than quick repositioning.

K&M also offers specialized stands for choir microphones, orchestral setups, and broadcast environments. Almost all models are compatible with standard 5/8" and 3/8" threads, making them usable with microphone clips and adapters from any manufacturer.

Speaker Stands: Where Reliability and Loading Speed Both Matter

In the late 1960s, K&M introduced the 214/6 speaker stand with an innovative height locking mechanism that quickly became the standard for small and medium-sized stages. This mechanism – locking pins with safety screws – is so reliable that it is still used in new models today.

Today's K&M speaker stand range includes models from lightweight aluminum stands for clubs or events to heavy-duty constructions with higher load limits. Model 21300, one of the most popular, is a standard solution for active compact speakers. The 21436 aluminum stand with a tripod base and cross braces supports up to 40 kg, suitable even for heavier passive speakers.

Music Stands: Orchestral Quality, Easily Transported

K&M music stands are the most varied category in their assortment. Lightweight folding models are designed for touring musicians and educational institutions, where the stand needs to be assembled in seconds and fit into hand luggage. Heavy-duty orchestral models with a massive base and wide desk are intended for professional orchestral musicians, where stability and music sheet size are more important than mobility.

Between these poles lies a wide selection: stands with digital height adjustment mechanisms, stands with integrated lighting mounts, models made from recycled plastic for more ecological environments. Model 10700 is a classic choice, combining lightness with sufficient stability for daily rehearsals and performances.

Instrument Stands: From Guitars to Saxophones

Guitar stands are one of K&M's strongest categories. The classic A-frame stand 17540, dubbed "indestructible," became a symbol for a generation of guitarists in the 1980s and is still sold today. Multi-instrument stands for several guitars at once are suitable for schools, studios, or event halls where several instruments need to be safely stored compactly.

Beyond guitars, K&M manufactures stands for saxophones, cellos, double basses, bandoneons, and many other instruments. Each stand is designed for the specific instrument's shape and weight, with rubber and soft contact zones to prevent scratching lacquered or polished surfaces.

Keyboard and Drum Equipment: Comfort During Long Rehearsals

Keyboard stands are a separate K&M specialization. Single and double-tier X-stands, column stands with adjustable arms, stands with integrated microphone threads and cable management – there is a specifically designed solution for every situation. A two-tier model allows a pianist to use a synthesizer and MIDI keyboard simultaneously without an additional table or structure.

Pianist benches and stools are another category where K&M has long experience. Model 13900 is a classic pianist bench with adjustable height and a sturdy metal base. Drummer stools like the 14035 with a pneumatic spring allow for quick and precise height adjustment even during a performance, which is important when stagehands are swapping instruments between bands.

Multimedia: Stands for the Modern Musician

Laptops, tablets, and phones have become standard parts of stage equipment. K&M responded to this over a decade ago by introducing special stands and holders for digital equipment. The laptop stand 12155 is a monolithic construction with adjustable height and a three-point support system, more reliable than popular cheap plastic solutions.

Tablet holders, which mount onto a standard microphone stand, allow pianists or choristers to use sheet music on screen without a separate dedicated stand. Phone holders, used for DJ desks or bassist pedalboards, are made from plant-based plastic as part of K&M's environmental program.

Made in Germany: Not a Label, but a Manufacturing Decision

"Made in Germany" for K&M is not a certificate that can be obtained by moving part of production to a cheaper country. The company manufactures almost all metal and plastic components in its own facilities in Wertheim. This includes stamping, laser cutting, turning, welding, powder coating, and final assembly. This level of vertical integration allows for control over tolerances and quality at every stage.

K&M holds ISO 14001 environmental certification and the EMAS II standard. Water consumption in production has been reduced by 94 percent since 1979. A solar power plant on the factory roof supplies 100 MWh to the grid annually. Some products, such as tablet holders, are made from plant-based plastic. These are not superficial embellishments but engineering decisions that cost more than cheaper alternatives but allow the company to consistently uphold its standards.

Why K&M – and Why No Other

There are many cheaper stands on the market. Some look similar, have similar specifications, and cost half as much. But musicians and technicians who use equipment daily usually return to K&M for a few simple reasons: screws don't break after a hundred assemblies, adjustment mechanisms work years later just as they did on the first day of use, and the height locking system doesn't unexpectedly release a stationary weight in the middle of a stage.

This is not a luxury for a musician. It's an investment that pays off within the first three years of daily use. Since 1949, from the first music stand by the Main River, K&M's philosophy has not changed: a good stand is one you don't notice because it simply always works.
